Full-Perimeter Counter-UAS Deployment at Tier-1 International Airport

Major Hub, Southeast Asia
June 2025
43M+ Annual Passengers

The Challenge

The client operates one of Southeast Asia's busiest international gateways. Between January and April 2025, the airport recorded 11 unauthorized drone incursions within its 5km exclusion zone. Three of these penetrated critical runway thresholds, forcing ground stops totaling 4.7 hours and impacting over 200 departures.

The airport authority required a solution that could detect drones within 15 seconds without any RF interference with ILS (Instrument Landing Systems), VHF Communications, or ATC Radar.

The Solution

RFApex engineered a three-layer active defense architecture purpose-built for aviation electromagnetic sensitivity. We installed six RF-7000 passive spectrum sensors at 8.5m elevation around the perimeter to achieve 360° seamless coverage with a 3.2km detection radius.

These sensors feed raw data into the RFA-X3 Edge Gateway, which uses an AI neural engine to identify drone types (DJI, Autel, FPV) within 3.1 seconds. Once confirmed, four RF-JM8 phased-array jammers engage targets with frequency-hopping disruption, forcing drones into a safe hover-and-land mode without affecting airport radar.

Results

Since full activation on June 18, 2025, the system has successfully neutralized 34 drone detection events. The average detection-to-alert time has been recorded at 8.2 seconds, significantly faster than the 15-second mandate.

Testing by the Civil Aviation Authority confirmed 100% electromagnetic compatibility—zero interference was recorded with airport navigation systems. The airport has avoided estimated delay-related operating costs of USD $2.1 million in just the first 90 days.

"RFApex was the only system that passed our ILS interference verification test on the first attempt. The 72-hour deployment was faster than we expected for a system of this complexity."
